Have you ever walked into a friends house and just been amazed at the beautiful hardwood floors? The craftsmanship, the care, the way they frame a room and give it life, a life no other flooring choice could compare to. Just walk into one of those amazing Santa Barbara Wineries or stroll into the nicest of resturants and you will see the most imaginative and fantastic hardwood floors that any one could dream of and turn into a reality.

Why is it that one of the most basic and primative of flooring choices out there can still inspire awe. The gleam of candle light that bounces off the surface of that slightly glossy finish. The elegant and subtle roll of a handscraped and distressed wood that feels 100 years old but has a style as current as your I pod. Do you remember there was actually a time when people would cover up all their wood floors, hiding them and installing carpet over the top. Now a days people rip up old carpet in hopes of finding the burried treasure that was once disgarded.

Flooring 101 has got what you need to make that room. We have so many fantastic hardwood choices available to compliment your decore, and just make that room something that inspires. What do you want your floors to say?

I would love to reduce my carbon footprint, to make a difference in my world. I want to save forests, recycle and give back everything that I can for myself and my family. The problem I’ve found is that green doesn’t just refer to our mission in life of saving the environment, it also refers to those few dollars and cents I fight to hold on to. Because being green can be expensive, very expensive.

However I’ve found that being green in the flooring world is getting easier and (thank goodness) cheaper. Flooring choices are becoming much more durable, can be used longer and either be refinished or cleaned. There are so many fashionable yet practical solutions to your flooring needs. Whether it’s pets, kids or a messy spouse there are an infinite number of solutions.

Flooring 101 has carpets available that are made 100% from recycled soda bottles, and we have taken steps to stop throwing old carpeting in land fills, by reclaiming and recycling. We have wood floors that use less raw materials, and some wood floors have even been reclaimed out of old abandoned buildings. But, the best part is that it’s affordable. Whether it’s for one room or your whole house lets make this world a better place and save some money while we do it.

Recently, some friends purchased their first house. As you can imagine, they were excited about their new purchase and anxious to make the house a home. First on the list: carpet, paint and decorate there new home. Moving from room to room they started to paint, unpack and settle in to their new lives.

Their next step was to paint their toddlers’ new bedroom. After putting several sample colors swatches on the wall, they selected the perfect color. They poured the paint in the roller tray, applied their first coat and then went downstairs to have some lunch and let the walls dry.

After a good lunch and a couple hours, they gathered all their equipment. Ready to get started, they went up stairs to finish the walls. Unfortunately their helpful son had decided to start without them. Found the pail of paint, and did his best. The result was a bit shocking.

That’s when they came back to me. When they walked in to our store, they were many things, and none of those were happy. Luckily they purchased their carpet from us, a “Stainmaster Flooring Center.” The carpeting that they purchased was an Ultra Life product. An exclusive warranty only found in Stainmaster Flooring Centers. “The warranty,” I explained “actually covers ANY type of stain!”

Together we submitted the claim and in no time their home was exactly the way they had dreamt it. Why Stainmaster?… Why not?

There they stood, wide eyed in wonderment, scanning the showroom with raised eyebrows. They took 12 steps forward and then stopped and started talking amongst themselves. I approached, greeting the couple and offering my assistance.

“We just purchased a home and it’s a mess… We need all new flooring and don’t know where to begin!”

Where do you begin when you have a blank canvas? What questions do you ask when you know nothing about the subject? So often we enter into uncharted territory, arms crossed and nervous. In any of our showrooms there are thousands of products that come in a variety of different materials, colors, styles, and textures.

The sample that you may so casually pick off the display rack and place on the floor will some day define your living room. The carpet sample you drag your bare foot across will some day be the cushion that your baby learns to walk on. That floor will be danced on, run across, be a table, a coaster, and the perfect place to watch TV or read a book.
Look into the things that make up your daily life. Ask yourself the questions that define you and your lifestyle…

We strolled through the store, and I started asking the questions that would help create their perfect home. Slowly we narrowed the field and when we were down to three different samples the couple breathed a sigh of relief.

“Take these home and see which one looks best next to your paint, and with your furniture,” I said. We parted ways and the couple walked out of our store with a look that showed the weight of the world had been lifted off of their shoulders.

So, when you set out to pick out that perfect floor, remember: this floor is not just what you walk on, it’s what you live on.
